About the Neuron Plug-ins for Toolbook

The Tutorials on this web site were developed with the Toolbook authoring program . When one of these Tutorials is selected, it is downloaded to the cache of the user's computer. To run the program, a browser plug-in, Toolbook Neuron,  must be installed. Neuron contains the runtime module which permits the downloaded program to run on the local computer. The Neuron plug-in may downloaded from the SumTotal Systems Website  .   See Neuron installation information on the SumTotal Systems download page.   After the file is downloaded, double-clicking will begin the installation. After the installation, find the Neuron program group and select non-secure mode. Restart the browser.

There are several series of Neuron plug-ins. The Neuron 5.x series was developed for use with Toolbook 5.x programs, the Neuron 6.x series was developed for use with Toolbook 6.x programs and the Neuron 7.x series was developed for use with Toolbook 7.x programs.    The EKG Tutorial was written with Toolbook 5.x. The Atlas Demo and The Cardiovascular Tutorial demo's were written with Toolbook 6.x.  The specific Neuron version may be used, however, the Neuron plug-ins are backwardly compatible.  The latest version will work with all the previous versions of Toolbook.

To be sure the program will run, here is what you need to do:

        1. If there is an earlier version of Neuron on your computer, delete it.
        2. Down load the latest version of the Neuron plug-in.
        3.
After the file is downloaded, double-clicking will begin the installation. After the installation, find the Neuron program group and select non-secure mode.  Restart the browser.

If you use the latest version of the Neuron plug-in, you may get the following message at runtime.

"Toolbook Verson Loader
The toolbook book that you are opening will be opened by a later version of the program. Version specific scripts may not run properly.
Do you wish to continue Yes/No"

This is not an error message.  It is simply telling you that the Neuron plug-in is a later version than the Toolbook version used to write the program.  There are no version specific scripts and the program will run properly. Answer Yes and proceed.

The Cardiovascular Tutorial Demos On the Web

Neuron Plug-in for the Cardiovascular Tutorial Demos on the Web

The Cardiovascular Tutorial demos were developed with Toolbook 6.x. To run them from the Web, the Neuron plug-in Version 6.x or later must be installed and non-secure mode selected. The latest version may be used.  The plug-in may be downloaded from the SumTotal Systems Website .  See Neuron installation information on Asymetrix download page.  After the file is downloaded, double-clicking will begin the installation. After the installation, find the Neuron program group and select non-secure mode. Restart the browser.

NOTE: If you are upgrading your Neuron plug-in, use Start/Settings/Control Panel/ Add-Remove, or the uninstall icon to uninstall the older version.

Select latest version of Neuron.   Download into a separate directory. To install, double-click on the .exe file.

The installation process will create a Neuron program group.  Go to this program group and select the Non-Secure Mode icon. Restart the browser.

Browser Information for the Cardiovascular Tutorial Demos on the Web

The most commonly used browsers are Netscape and Microsoft Explorer. These can be downloaded from their respective home pages, or from buttons on the Study-Med Web page. Both will work with Neuron in Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. With Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 3.51, only Netscape and Explorer 4.0 or later will work with Neuron.

Select the browser you wish to use. Download into a separate directory. To install, double-click on the .exe file.

Computer System Information for the Cardiovascular Tutorial Demos on the Web

The Cardiovascular Demos using Neuron will only run on a PC system. The monitor resolution should be set to 800x600 or higher. If a 14 inch monitor is used, all of the program may not be visible on the screen. Higher resolution should be used or some of the browser toolbar options turned off. With Windows 98 some browsers have a full screen option which may be used.

The Cardiovascular Tutorials On CD-ROM

Availability of the Cardiovascular Tutorials on CD-ROM

The Cardiovascular Tutorials have been licensed to Cardionics, Inc., and will be available soon on a CD-ROM.   If you want more information, fill in the registration form on the Web page.

Installation of the Cardiovascular Tutorials on CD-ROM

Follow conventional instructions for the installation of any CD-ROM. The installation program for these discs creates a program group and an icon to run the tutorial along with putting a README file in the directory Studymed on the C: drive. None of the program files are transferred to the hard drive and the program runs complete from the CD-ROM.

The installation program offers the option of installing Video for Windows (do it for Windows 3.x but not for Windows 95, 98, or NT),

The installation program also offers the option to configure Mplayer32 for AVI files (do it for Windows NT, but not Windows 3.x, 95 or 98).

If the Media Player installed on your computer does not perform to your expectations, you may wish to download and install the latest version of the Windows Meda Player from the Microsoft Website.  Just click on the Get Windows Media Player Logo here.

getmedia_white.gif (1861 bytes)

See the README file on the CD-ROM for further information.

Re-configuring Windows98 for AVI files

Some users of Windows98 may find that they must re-configure Media Player to run the AVI files in the Cardiovascular Tutorials (error message: Not a valid file name). This is done by modifying the Windows registry. Unless the user is familar with this process, manually editing the Windows registry can be a risky procedure.

The easiest and safest way to do this is to reach us by E-Mail at: ssteinze@studymed.com.  Ask for a very short (93 bytes) text file named "mplay98.reg". We will attach the file to our E-Mail reply.  Download this file to a directory of your choice. Double-Click on the downloaded file. This will safely modify the registry and let you know that it has been done successfully.

Study-Med Software will provide technical support for the Cardiovascular Tutorials. Please monitor our web site at: www.studymed.com  or www.studymed.com/tech-support/info.htm for further information.

In Windows 98, some sound cards may not produce the sound associated with AVI Clips.  This is a Microsoft Windows 98 bug.  The only fix for this at the moment is to try another computer, or use a computer other than Windows 98, such as Windows 3.1, or Windows NT.

Computer System Information for the Cardiovascular Tutorials on CD-ROM

The Tutorial will only run on a PC system. Monitor resolution should ideally be set to 640 x 480 using small fonts. 800 x 600 with small fonts could also be used. High (16 bit) color is desirable.
