Burning of the Tall Grass, Flint Hills, Watercolor

P2250005.jpg (98110 bytes)

Says Dr. Ashcraft:

I grew up in Hillsboro, Kansas where we used to burn our Bermuda grass lawn every spring in order to promote new growth.  In this same fashion the ranchers of the Flint Hills burn the tall grass each spring.  The burning is a phenomenal sight and usually occurs between April 1 and May 1.  I painted this watercolor from a picture that was one of a series by Larry Schwarm from a book whose name I can't recall.  This was published in the Star Magazine Sept 28, 2003.
The technique of painting a fire in watercolor is a real challenge.   My usual themes are farms and barns not on fire.  I am a member of a cooperative gallery, Images II, located at 1721 Westport road (just a block east of State Line Road).  In addition to the 6 or 7 paintings of mine in the gallery, there are some really neat things of very good quality.  I will also be having a one-man show of about 40 paintings at the Merriam Community Center in October 2004 entitled "Midwest and More."
