The Osler Society of Greater Kansas City

Founding Charter

 

Whereas:  Sir William Osler (1849-1919) led an exemplary life, was a great physician who cared enormously for his patients, was the father of modern medical education, and took great pride in the accomplishments of his students, and

Whereas:  There is currently no organization in Greater Kansas City dedicated to the honoring of Sir William Osler, and

Whereas:  Such an organization would be of great value to the medical students of the greater Kansas City area, and could contribute to the development of these students,

Be it Proposed That:

I     A student organization called, "The Osler Society of Greater Kansas City",   (OSGKC) be founded. 

II   OSGKC be encouraged, supported, and advised by faculty from KUMC, UMKC and the John Locke Society of Greater Kansas City. Such participation would be voluntary and without pay.

III The purposes of this organization would be: 

A.                To provide a forum where students and physicians could meet for fellowship, to discuss topics of mutual interest, and to encourage a mentoring environment between students and physicians. 

B.                To honor and advance the ideals exemplified by the life of Sir William Osler.

 

1.      Membership:

A.     The founding members would be the student members who have worked with the John Locke Society of Greater Kansas City over the past two years who would be grandfathered in if they so wish and physician members of the John Locke Society who are interested.

B.     Student Membership:

1. The KUMC Academic Society directors advise students of the opportunity to participate in the OSGKC, gage interest, and nominate a student from their society to join the OSGKC as second year students. These KUMC students must be approved by the Office of Student Affairs prior to induction.

2. UMKC � Students may apply to the OSGKC, but must provide a personal statement of interest and a statement of support from his/her docent or the faculty advisor of an organization that he/she is a current member of.  A committee consisting of the OSGKC advisor, a representative from the Office of Student Affairs, and at least one other representative from the School of Medicine will select members from qualified applicants.

C.     New physician membership would be open to physicians in the Greater Kansas City Area who are members of the KUMC, UMKC faculty or the John Locke Society who wish to participate.

D.     Both KUMC and UMKC will appoint a faculty advisor who will represent the schools and advise the Osler Society.  He/she may recruit other faculty members to assist him/her as needed.

E.      Membership will be on a voluntary basis.  There will be no dues or fees. 

2.      Activities:

A.     The OSGKC host a fall and a spring meeting for all interested students from KUMC and UMKC.

1. At KUMC, all students and academic society faculty members would be invited through their academic society.  

       2. At UMKC, all students in years 3-6 would be invited.

 OSGKC would provide programming such as a speaker in consultation with KUMC and UMKC.

B.     The OSGKC would arrange programming for selected KUMC and UMKC students that may include but is not limited to: mentoring, hospice rounds, school-based educational programs, advocacy, and general community involvement. Distinguished guests would be invited from time to time.  There will be no cost to students.

3.      Funding:

This will be accomplished by voluntary contributions to tax deductible funds available at KU Endowment and UMKC. 

 

4.      Development: 

Activities will be planned at each school by representatives of that school working with representatives of the John Locke Society.  As much as possible, activities involving students will be planned together so that students from both schools will have the opportunity to interact.  The Osler Society Working Group will continue to meet periodically to supervise the overall operation of the Society.
